Electric school buses are currently on high demand. It's following the trend of public transit with the transition to clean energy. As transit agencies offer more electric buses as a cleaner alternative, school buses also needed to catch up. School transportation is the largest mass transit system in the nation.
There are many benefits for schools that are using electric school buses. From the environment to also financially, among other benefits.
Environment & Health
Using diesel buses to transport kids emit harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. This contributes negatively to air pollution and climate change. With the transition to electric buses, it helps improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions.
In addition, electric schoolbuses can improve student absenteeism, especially for those students who have respiratory problems such as asthma. By riding electric buses, it can impact students’ health in the long run.
Cost Savings
The upfront cost can be a challenge for any school district. But eventually, using electric buses can help save money long term. The operating costs are lower compared to diesel fueled buses. It also saves on fuel, and maintenance costs. In addition, with the use of electric energy, these buses can be eligible for government incentives and grants that can help offset initial costs.
Noise Reduction
Conventional diesel buses have engines and exhaust noise can be loud. Electric buses are virtually quiet when in operation, making the commute more peaceful and comfortable for both students and drivers.
Conclusion
Electric buses are more affordable in the long run. It helps reduce the carbon emissions, improve air quality, improves the health of the students and driver, and even provide a comfortable rider experience since it’s quieter than traditional diesel.
The World Resources Institute states that nearly 200,000 of the more than 25 million students who takes the bus as transportation will catch an electric battery-powered ride this year. This institute’s data analysis also finds that over 800 school districts in the nation have at least one electric bus operating and transporting children. In addition, funding from several districts is secured for about 12,000 more.
